Are Catholic Marriages different from Protestant Marriages

?

Catholics and Protestants are both Christians. But still there are many differences between the two. The dress of their clergyman is different. Their services are conducted in different manners. Catholics lay much stress on symbols, rituals and other ceremonies. They have a different version of Bible from the older Latin Vulgate. Yet there are many differences found in their marriage ceremonies.

Catholics believe that a marriage will be blessed by God, only if it is performed in a Catholic Church. Catholics can be termed as staunch Christians. But for Protestants, God is omnipresent, he is everywhere, and a marriage can be performed even while travelling on a train. Protestants seem more practical. They offer a free form of religion, which does not require its follower to practice set rituals and observances.

Catholic wedding can include a homily, but it is not such a case in the Protestant wedding. Homily is explanation of each oral religious set of words that are spoken or sung during the ceremony.

Catholic weddings have a Communion and all the rituals connected to it. (Communion is to be practiced by every Christian throughout his life. The worship time when everyone comes together to remember the one who suffered for the sins of mankind is considered to be the communion time.) By using the word ritual, what is meant is, there will be lot of kneeling, singing, standing, chanting etc.

Remark by a Protestant on marriage:

"Lastly, there is matrimony which all admit was instituted by God, though no one before the time of (Pope) Gregory regarded it as a sacrament. What man in his sober senses could so regard it? God's ordinance is good and holy; so also are agriculture, architecture, shoemaking, hair-cutting legitimate ordinances of God, but they are not sacraments."

Catholics differed in their views with Protestants. It was largely due to this reason that they in Trent said, "If any one shall say that matrimony is not truly and properly one of the Seven Sacraments of the Evangelical Law, instituted by Christ our Lord, but was invented in the Church by men, and does not confer grace, let him be anathema."

Protestants believe that a good marriage reflects inner grace.

Christ held the institution of marriage in high esteem. This was self evident when he performed a miracle at a wedding in Cana. (He turned water into wine.) According to Christ, marriage is a sacred bond, a bond which God has blessed. No one has the authority to break this sacred thread which binds two souls in holy union.

Church is protecting the natural, essential essence of this marriage institution.

Marriages are public affairs; church requires it to be one. It is a celebration time for everyone. According to the church, man and woman come together as joint responsible members of the society. Marriage is a brick to the institution of society, with the sanction from the highest authority of God on earth, which is the Church.
