Are Disposable Bibs Safe To Use?
In the dental profession, bibs and towels offer basic protection against infection and contamination
. Dentists usually stock up on disposable bibsand good quality dental materialsto ensure the safety of their patients.
Medical professionals are always concerned about preventing infections during treatment. Hands are the most common carriers of germs and while frequent washing of hands with hand sanitizers is an effective way to contain the issue of infection, the risk does not always get resolved with this. Surgeons scrub before and after each procedure. In addition, disposable gloves are used after washing hands. In fact as much as possible, dentists use disposable supplies to prevent the chances of passing on germs or being infected. Gloves minimize the risk of passing microorganisms present on the health care providers hands to the patient and vice versa. Besides these, dentists also take care to wear masks and protective eyewear.
Finding reliable sources for good quality dental materials is a major challenge for dentists and dental technicians. Once they find a source they can depend on, they have the ongoing worry of ensuring that the risk of contamination and infection is minimized.
Safety measures taken by dentists to control infection
Infection control is the single biggest problem in a medical setting. There are special measures recommended for dentistry by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention as infections can spread in a number of ways, including dental materials and instruments, surfaces in the clinic and water lines. To control this, doctors regularly sterilize their dental materials including dental hand pieces after each use. Potential infections are contained through disposable supplies like disposable bibs, paper cups, cotton rolls and gauze pads. Other surfaces like handles, chairs, countertops, pens, door knobs and faucet handles are disinfected. Labeled containers are used to properly dispose bio dental waste and dental materials.Dental staff often gets themselves vaccinated against infectious diseases to prevent accidental transmission.
Disposable bibs safe to wear
Dental bib holders which are used to secure the bib on the patient are considered the worst carriers of infection in the dental industry. These holders are overlooked when other dental materials and equipment are sterilized. Bib holders have been found to transmit high levels of the pseudomonas, E. coli and staph infection causing bacteria. This is dangerous because younger dental patients are prone to contaminations from these. To avoid this disposable bibs and bib holders are used.
Disposables help prevent cross contamination. With conventional bibs and holders, bacteria can be transmitted to each patient who touches the bib holder and touches his or her mouth or eyes immediately after. Usually the risk of cross contamination arises when the bib chain has traces of saliva, plaque, blood and other mouth secretions. This bib chain can also get caught in the hair and mix with the patients skin infection, sweat and make up.
No matter how hard the dentist works to sterilize and protect dental instruments and equipment, it is difficult to fight infections, unless disposable bibs, holders and dental materials are used.
