Are E-textbooks Beating Over Exclusive Book Stores?
Bookstores in South Africa have been always been a hub for intellectuals
, readers, and book lovers. They are a place where cultures, thoughts, and views come and blend together. No matter it's a large bookstore or a small one away from the town, all have a wide range of books, classics, Africana, and reading materials. Africa has always been famous for its antique bookstores. They always have had the charisma of delighting people with its all time classics, Africana, and paintings. In some of the bookstores they also have a section of stationary and music, or even a coffee parlor. So apart from buying books or reading materials people can also come, sit with friends and share thoughts while sipping a cup of hot coffee and biting sandwich.
Bookstores in South Africa can perfectly be described as a meeting point of international literature and culture. They have a wide assortment of books, reading materials, art, prints, maps and ephemera. Some of them issue Africana catalogues, and offer a search service for antiquarian and second-hand books.
But unfortunately, with the incessant development of web technology, people are inclining towards online reading than buying books from the bookstores. Right from the teens to middle aged people all prefer to read online. Even school students prefer to have the option of using e-books rather than buying books. More or less E-textbooks have the same content and layout as hardcopy versions. So given a choice between hardcopy versions and E-textbooks, student will prefer to go for the latter, but why?
There are several advantages of E-textbooks over hardcopy versions that students consider. Textbooks are usually hefty and heavy and so carrying them becomes a hassle, especially when students attend multiple classes. On the other hand, E-textbooks give the option of having thousands of textbook pages compressed into a very portable laptop.
Another great advantage of E-textbooks is many of them have search functions, helping people search for specific information more swiftly. With a hardcopy, students have to skim through pages or search the book's index to get specific information. Also taking down notes become a cleaner process electronically, as opposed to scratching some notes into the margin of a page. Also, copying, pasting and highlighting information becomes easy over E-textbooks.
Besides these, buying
school textbooks online is much cheaper than buying brand new hardcopies. E-Textbooks are available in two forms; some are downloadable version, while some can only be read while online. Both have own set of advantages. The former allows people to download information on their system and access to them any time they want. On the other hand, the latter allows people to read out the information when online, which let them have an access to the information from any computer.
However, at the end of the day, the decision to use E-textbooks over actual ones comes down one's personal preference. If you enjoy having easily searchable electronic versions of textbooks, you would not mind using them. But if you enjoy the traditional way of skimming through pages, you would like to have a hardcopy of textbook.
