Are Hair Extensions Hazardous or Are There Safe Alternatives to Second Hand Human Hair That Are Safe?

"Experts warn about the potential hazardous second hand hair extensions", says one of the country's leading hair expert.

Research results jointly published earlier this year by the University of Miami in Florida and Bologna University, Italy showed that women who use human hair extensions were at risk of developing permanent bald patches which, in the most severe cases, can be irreversible.

Hairdresser Simon Forbes, one of the industry's legendary figures, credited with creating the hair extension market, said he was delighted that the Medical Profession had felt the subject serious enough to commission this research. " Clearly, we have a vested interest in advocating Monofibre but there is now authoritative impartial medical evidence that supports the view that we have been expressing for many years that there are health risks associated with human hair extensions," he added.

Forbes invented Monofibre Hair Extensions some 30 years ago and in 2000 he was awarded the Fellowship of British Hairdressing Millennium award for his "outstanding contribution to the hairdressing industry". "Never did I imagine that anyone would ever dream of applying glue in to hair, as it is a dangerous thing to do".

"Second hand human hair extensions have to be glued into natural hair, require solvents such as acetone to remove them and there are scores of well-documented cases, including many celebrities, who have suffered severe bald patches and other scalp problems as a result. Some human hair extensions also use metal rings instead of glue but they too can rub and damage the scalp.

"Acrylic Monofibre extensions require no glues or solvents and in fact out-perform human hair. They are much lighter and do not put any stress on the hair follicles they are easy to wear and look after and, more importantly, do not carry any of the health risks associated with second hand hair.

"The other issue we brought to attention was the ethical aspects of this hair that comes from women in third world countries who are paid paltry sums of money for their crowning glory to end up on celebrities' heads".

Forbes is owner of the Antenna hair salon in Kensington, London - where only Monofibre extensions are used but he stresses that the acrylic alternative is available at many other reputable salons around the world.

Forbes added: "Aesthetically, Monofibre extensions also lend themselves to an array of colours that can be mixed to the individual's requirements and overall the process is in fact less expensive that second hand human hair". However it does require education and skill of a hairdresser to apply and because the glue in type requires no skill it has become an easy option for the industry. Many of the salons offering these services seem in denial that they are using glue because the sources they are buying from do not explain. Incredible as this may seem to someone outside the industry.

"Monofibre Hair Extensions are unquestionably the gold standard service and we hope that consumers are made aware of the damage glue can do to their own hair and the safe hair extension alternative. They deserve it.
