The car wash has received a bad reputation in recent years , with unprecedented bad press. Statistics in the news recently have suggested that around 80% of car washes in the UK do not comply with legal requirements, which, given the number of car washes currently operating in the UK, is a staggering figure. Many people think that due to the nature of cash in hand payments, hand car washes have become simply cover ups for dodging taxes. There have been cases in national press which report on numerous car washes throughout the UK engaging in criminal activity. There have been many cases of hiring people who do not have valid permits to work in the UK, underpaying wages and avoiding taxes. There have also been the more serious reports on those car was companies that were using their business merely as a front for more serious crimes just as money laundering and drug trafficking. Naturally, these reports may, in the long-term, prevent people from using a hand car wash and opting for other services. This in itself is understandable, as people do not want to support an industry which is increasingly becoming to be seen as a "black market".

The question is, is this reputation really deserved?

The simple answer is no, and for one simple reason. The facts are in place that 80% of hand car wash operate illegal, and recently in Manchester two car wash owners were arrested for drug trafficking and hiring illegal immigrants. However, this bad reputation has a damaging affect on those 20% of car wash owners who do operate legally. There are thousands of hand car washes across the UK, which means that out of these thousands a significant amount of companies are trading legally and the increasingly bad reputation of hand car washes means that those companies who pay taxes and ensure that all legal requirements are in place, are losing business.

Hand car washes in the UK are an invaluable service and provide thousands of jobs to those in need. Okay, it may be the case that there are shady goings on in many car washes, however this reputation cannot be blanketed across the whole industry, as this can be damming to honest business men and those in need of a living, particularly in these difficult times.
