Optometrists also examine the eye to see if there are any signs of more serious conditions, such as corneal infections or glaucoma. If the eye looks relatively healthy, they will simply send you on your way home. However, if they notice a trouble spot or something concerning, they will then send you to an ophthalmologist.

Most optometrists and ophthalmologists work in the same office, so they will most likely send you across the hall for a second opinion. The ophthalmologist will take a closer look at your eye after receiving the diagnosis from the optometrist. They will then recommend the next course of action, which could be as simple as prescribing eye drops or as complex as performing corrective eye surgery. Unlike optometrists, ophthalmologists are licensed to prescribe eye medication and perform eye surgeries. They help treat eye conditions as best as possible and determine which type of treatment is best for the patient.
