Maybe the player signed these long length contracts as they'd be handed a higher wage. Maybe they signed these contracts because they feared signing a 2 year contract, and taking it from there might actually prove detrimental to their likelihood of a contract extension or a pay increase if they've been playing particularly badly. In any case, many players are leaving well before their contracts are up, and I believe it'll be sooner, as opposed to later, when a club finally stands up, and will not give into the peer pressure, normally applied by the player or the team wishing to buy them when they want to move. The team should simply refuse to release the player, or in the worst situation, they ought to at the very least get decent money for him, well over whatever they initially paid if the player is performing well for their side. If the player has done well for the team, and you don't currently have a better player in that position, you shouldn't want to sell him, so if you do, at least get your money's worth.
