Are Video Games Good For Society?
So why do people fork out hundreds of dollars on the latest video game consoles and
spend hour upon hour perched in front of the television trying to triumph against either make-believe enemies or somebody half way across the world that they may have just met?
I'll tell you why:becuase it's fun!
Damn fun!
For some of us gamers out there,we are drawn to the video game scene because it is the only way that we are ever going to come close to experiencing the thrill of being a rock star or a sporting icon whom does his or her thing in front of a hundred thousand screaming fans.
There are also those of us that pursue theexcitement of being involved in a real life horror movie as we face off against demon soldiers and the like through games such as the all-conquering Gears of War franchise.Anybody whom has ever sat down with their xbox 360 and immersed themselves in the world of Marcus Fenix knows exactly what I am talking about,with the video game experience brought to a new level of excitement if you are lucky enough to own a projector and a powerful home theatre setup such as yours truly.
Perhaps you prefer to just wander around your surroundings at your own pace as you live the life of a thug in the Saints Row games or prefer Medieval conquests through the expansive and endearing worlds brought to life through the Fable franchise.
It doesn't really matter as long as you are having fun.
To some people,such exploits are viewed as being sad and pathetic and above all else a waste of our preciously small time here on Earth.
This may be true,but who are we to judge what another person does to amuse his or herself;as long as they are not harming another living being or breaking the law?
I have heard parents complain about their children spending too much time in front of the television when they could be outside running around.So why not just make sure that your child does go outside for at least an hour before playing their favourite game.
There are also extreme cases of people never going outside and really living because all of their free time is spent playing video games.To these people,I would suggest some social contact,even if it just with other gamers,as nothing can replace a human relationship:I don't care how amazing the graphics are on the latest Madden or Forza games.
For those negative people that say video games inhibit a person's social life,I suggest that they hook up the new Kinect console with their Xbox 360 and dance the night away with some friends.This is also a great alternative to going to bars where they charge you an exhorbitant amount for every drink you purchase as well as eliminating the presence of sleazy drunken strangers that are just looking for trouble.
Who is to say that someone cannot meet their perfect match through an online skirmish?Weirder things have occurred on this planet of ours people.
There is also the fact that most video game consoles can play dvd movies to consider as well.
Did I mention how people are now winning loads of cash through video game competitions also?The television showUltimate Gamer is proof of that fact.
Of course if health reasons prevent you from engaging in computer games then I would suggest finding an alternative means of entertainment.This also applies to people whom take gaming too seriously or who might want to emulate the potentially dangerous or unlawful actions of in game characters.
So in conclusion I would just like to say that video games are not for everybody as we are born with different interests.
However,I cannot see how playing computer games can be a detriment to society as there is just too much fun and laughter to be had.
But that's just my opinion folks.
Plus there is an old saying that still rings true today:Don't knock something until you've tried it.
