Are We Heading Into A Robot World?

Sci-Fi fantasists throughout the last century such as the wildly paranoid genius Philip K Dick have often explored and returned to a key theme in the man vs machine model: will the machines rise up and take over

? While these often focus on sentience and rebellion rather than a lengthening dole queue, the more mundane reality has often been that while machines have remained placid and pleasant, their use as a cheap, controllable human replacement has expanded dramatically. So are the robots taking our jobs?

The benefits of industrial automation are obvious the potential for machines both in strength and skill, and increasingly recently in dexterity and sensory perception, far outweighs our own limits. Their use within the workplace reduces monotonous and tedious jobs, reduces human risk and in many cases reduces costs. But does this mean we will all soon be out of a job?

Any paranoia is most likely very ill-founded. While few studies have taken place into the effect of industrial automation, as its presence has grown, so has the quality of life for the majority of the population in relevant regions. And the control systems and the machines themselves need building and maintaining and controlling. The control systems which are used to manage and regulate such automated systems can be extremely high-tech and complex, and skilled workers able to create and use these control systems are needed. Throughout history jobs have constantly evolved and this new factor simply means they are evolving in new and exciting ways, removing the mundane work that was many a man's plight.

So it's unlikely that a robot is going to steal your job anytime soon. And if it does there will be plenty more needed as a result. As they say, one way or another, one day, we'll all work in IT.
