Cold frame growing is practical and economical because it is easy to do, and it will save you money--no more buying expensive vegetables when you possess the perfect micro-climate to grow your own, year-round. For many families, this is a great way to eat healthier as well. Enjoy the harvest of lettuces, parsley, radishes, spinach, turnips, onions, and many other vegetables, right in your own back yard. Cold frames also provide the perfect environment for flowers. You can grow your own seedlings, which can later be transplanted into pots or flower gardens. This will save you a lot of money if you are a flower lover.

When choosing a cold frame to buy, always measure accurately and carefully in the area you wish to place it. Choose a cold frame that will fit into the area and leave enough space for kneeling, sitting, and working around it. It is important that you are able to access all corners of the cold frame in order to properly care for your plants. When choosing which size to purchase, consider how tall your tallest plants will be and choose a suitable height. Cold frames constructed from wood tend to provide better insulation. However, aluminum will also work, and is lighter and easier to move. Lids are usually constructed of glass or a clear and sturdy plastic such as polycarbonate. Both materials have pros and cons, and one may work better for you depending on your environment. For example, glass may break and could be a hazard around children or pets. An advantage of a plastic lid is that it will not easily shatter or break, and there is less risk of accidentally scorching the plants.
