Are You Cut Out To Be A Plastic Surgeon?

Most people are already aware of the fact that the road to becoming a plastic surgeon involves an extensive amount of schooling and training

. Although this may be seen as one of the most difficult parts of the journey, some don't realize that there are several other things involved with successfully maintaining a career in this field. If you are thinking about pursuing a career as a plastic surgeon, there are several things you may want to consider.

First of all, you will have to be able to handle the stresses that come along with not being able to please all of your patients. No matter how good of a job you do, some people will simply not be happy with your work. If you put your best foot forward, you will rarely have to deal with this issue. However, as previously stated, some people won't be happy no matter what you do. So, if you consider yourself a people-pleaser who isn't able to handle criticism well, this may not be the career for you.

In order to be successful in this field you should also be able to shoulder heavy responsibilities, without folding under pressure. Some see procedures such as heart surgery as being more dangerous and stressful than most other occupations. This may be true to an extent. However, it doesn't negate the fact that a plastic surgeon must also deal with the possibility of making a mistake that could cause extreme harm or even death to their patients. With this in mind, you must have the mental capacity to handle this truth without allowing it to get the best of you.

Lastly, as a plastic surgeon you cannot have a short attention span. Some procedures can take anywhere from 1 to 8 hours. If you are a person who gets bored easily or if you have trouble paying attention and keeping yourself engaged in tasks for moderate to long periods of time, you may not be cut out for this occupation. This isn't to say that you have to act like a robot, because no human being is able to work 8 hours without taking some type of break. However, the point is that you must be able to work diligently, while being engaged for much longer than 10 minutes at a time.

So, being a plastic surgeon will take much more than going to school for 10 to 15 years. The real test comes when the person is actually working in the field, dealing with the mental stresses that come along with the job.
