You look at your watch. It is almost 8 PM and the last member of your team has just shut down his computer. Hes on his way out leaving you alone in the room with a stack full of unfinished work. What is delegation?

Delegation is the process of assigning formal authority, responsibility and accountability for work activities to your subordinates. Please bear in mind the three terms: authority, responsibility and accountability. Delegation transfers those three qualities form one organizational level to a lower level. Delegation is deep-seated in the essential function of management, which is to produce results through people. Every level of management, from the business leader to the front line supervisor, must delegate in order to achieve his goals.

Why is delegating so important?

1) Employees often need training programs to develop themselves, but real assignments are the best career builders. Therefore, delegation also allows you to fulfill your responsibility to develop your subordinates. If you delegate judiciously and frequently, you will build a strong and successful team.

2) You will never know what your people are capable of if you dont bring challenging and new assignments their way. Delegation highlights the capabilities and shortcomings of your subordinates.

3) It will definitely address your problem of too much to do and too little time.
