Most people commonly think of motion detector lights as excellent additional security for your house.

However there are many instances where the can also be used indoors. These light sources can be very cost effective and can be energy efficient. There is also the 'cool' factor of walking into a room, garage, basement, etc and the lights simply come on and then switch off once you leave. How cool it that!

Indoor motion sensor lights are ideal for a basement, laundry room, garage or even walk-in closet to offer convenient lighting instantly. As a light is equipped with a sensor, it will activate once a room is entered or a door is opened, and as a way to save on energy will switch off once you leave. Many of these lights are battery powered making them simple to install. Others simply fix to a stand socket, basically they need no wiring.

If installing a motion sensor light outside then there a lot more things to consider. Firstly, is it for security or convenience such as an automatic light on the back porch for when you are putting the garbage out. The difference essentially is light and the amount of it.

If it's for security then more light is better. If somebody is prowling around your garden in the dark, then being whacked by 500 or 1000 watts of light is enough to rattle even the hardiest of souls... they are not got to hang about. On the other hand being hit by 500watts of light every time you put the cat, garbage, etc. out will drive you demented. Not to mention the neighbors.

For convenience lighting look at solar rechargeable LED types lights. Low on power, won't blind you and extremely easy to install. Also great for indoors; basement, garage, attic, etc.

For security you can still use solar LED, but one with plenty of light. LED's are low power but also low light so get one with 40, 50 or even 80 LED's.

However, the best for security is a mains wired halogen. More of a hassle to install but really it's the best option for outdoor security.

A word of warning, be careful where you install motion detector lights outdoors. Keep them away from trees and climbing plants that will move in the wind as your light will be going on and off all night. Not a good plan, particularly if it's outside your bedroom window.

Overall, a motion sensor light offers both extra security outdoors and also the safety of knowing when entering a closet or garage that it will be well lit.
