The blockage in the Eustachian tube, which links the middle ear to oral cavity, can cause inflammation.
Opening of the Eustachian tube is important for treating the inflammation. Otitis media is commonly caused by viruses or bacteria. Malfunctioning of Eustachian tube is a major risk factor of causing the condition.
Acute otitis media makes stuffy nose and cold, it can cause severe pain in the ear. Usually the pain stops within 2- 3 days but it can last for more than a week also. It can rupture the ear drum and can result into the discharge of pus from the middle ear. The rupture drum rapidly heals by itself.
It can progress to more severe condition. The tissues surrounding the Eustachian tube may swell due to an upper respiratory infection.
Children are found more prone to otitis media because of their shorter Eustachian tube. Childrens tube is less stiff and narrower also. It leads to the chances of bacterial infection.Many other factors can also cause
otitis media in children such as wrong way of feeding, parental smoking, allergies, diet etc.
The treatment plan may be of various kinds such as
Symptomatic: in this condition oral and topical analgesics are used to treat the painful condition of otitis media.
Antibiotics: most of the cases get rid of by the above mentioned measures; otherwise antibiotics are used to treat the condition although they leave adverse effects.
Tympanostomy tube: this treatment is applied on some chronic cases that got affected 6 or 4 times in a year
Alternative therapies: sometimes other treatments which are not proved in the medical science are used to treat.
