Are You Taking Care Of Your Body Strength?
Until recently we viewed getting older as accepting changes to our body and life
. Unwelcome and unavoidable weight gain, loss of strength and energy, susceptibility to injury and increased risk of disease. But the real cause of these symptoms is not actually the passing years; it is the loss of muscle tissue that accompanies the aging process caused by not doing enough muscle building and maintaining activity.
As some people get older they do not believe that intentional exercise is important and that they do not need to bother with it. But take a look in any nursing home to see the ramifications of this concept. There is nothing actually wrong with many of the residents, they are alert mentally, but are frail and do not have the strength and physical ability to take care of themselves.
The loss of 5 pounds of muscle tissue per decade is the reason why they need other people to feed and dress them. It would have been so easy for them to do a proper exercise program which would have meant they would have kept their strength as well as their independence and dignity so much longer.
Muscle tissue is vital for the body's functioning and movement along with support for the entire body and protection from injury. It also keeps all other systems strong and healthy including the immune system as protection from disease is essential for a long and healthy life.
There is simply no longer enough physical activity in our daily lives to keep our strength any longer. We can get through the day without 'moving a muscle'. Proper exercise is not an 'optional extra' or some' frivolous pastime' it is preventative medicine and an essential ingredient for the maintenance of a healthy body. Our bodies were designed to be active - very active, not be dormant.
Your strength and fitness and ultimately your own health are your own responsibility, and if you are not already doing so it is time to take that first step on your own path to the best you. It is possible to not only maintain your strength but also improve it across the course of your lifetime. You can be stronger and fitter in your 40's, 50's, 60's and even 70's than you are/were in your 20's and 30's.
To rebuild lost strength and continue to maintain it strength training exercise is the only type of exercise that can substantially slow or even reverse the decline in muscle tissue, bone density and strength. As many as 10-20 years of lost strength and mass loss can be reversed after regularly doing your program for just a couple of months with some effort put into it.
No matter what stage you are at in your life, if you do not make your strength a priority, it will not simply happen. But when you do make it a priority it will have benefits that positively affect all areas of our lives, at all stages of life. The payoff of keeping your strength is certainly worth it. Ask anyone who is strong and active.
