Are You Wasting Your Time? Earn Your Degree With Military Tuition Assistance!

As military equipment becomes more sophisticated and complicated, the military needs better educated personnel to operate and maintain the "smart stuff". Part of the military's strategy to accomplish this mission is helping you earn your degree in your off-duty time, at little to no cost to you. By paying for your degree through tuition assistance programs (TA), they hope you will decide stay in uniform longer. It is far more cost- and time-effective for them to pay for your education while you are still in rather than having to train a new recruit as your replacement.

Army Tuition Assistance Program

The Army's Tuition Assistance program covers 100 percent of your tuition for approved courses up to $250 per credit with a maximum per academic year cap of 4500. That is enough money to pay for 18 credits per year. Flexible in nature, the Army's TA program pays for both undergraduate and graduate programs taken either through distance learning or on-campus.

Educational Assistance in the Navy

Navy Tuition Assistance also pays 100 percent of the tuition at accredited institutions. For senior enlisted sailors - E7s with less than 16 years of service or E-8s with less than 18 years - there is the new Advanced Education Voucher Program.

If enrolled in a bachelor's degree program, in a Navy-relevant area of study, the Navy pays 100 percent of tuition, books and fees up to a maximum of $3600 per year for up to three years. If enrolled in an approved master's degree program, the amount is up to $20,000 per year for two years.

Navy-relevant areas of study include, but are not limited to:

Foreign languages

Management

Human resources

Engineering

Information technology

Nursing

Electrical and electronic technology

Higher Learning in the Marines

The Marines' Tuition Assistance program uses the same per credit/yearly cap as the Army's program. Covered expenses, besides tuition, include:

Instructional fees

Laboratory fees

Institutional fees

Computer fees

Tuition assistance can be used for vocational training and certification up through graduate study.

Tuition Assistance in the Air Force

As part of the Air Force's Voluntary Education Program, their tuition assistance per credit and yearly cap is the same as the other services. Degree programs can be either technical or academic in nature at either two or four-year schools. Courses may be taken on-base, off-base, or through various distance learning venues.

The Coast Guard's Assistance Program With the same per credit and yearly cap as the other services, the Coast Guard Tuition Assistance also covers:

Developmental courses

Laboratory, studio and shop fees

Consumable items

Internet/technology required for distance learning courses
