Are consumers ditching older cars for greener models?

A rising number of people with older vehicles may be seeking cash for cars in a bid to invest the money in newer, greener models.

According to Nissan, its Qashqai offering is now one of the firm's most popular in the UK.

The vehicle has a number of eco-friendly options for those who sell cars in order to get it, including a stop/start engine system, which is available with its 1.6 litre petrol version.

This means the engine stops when the car is in neutral or at a standstill and starts again automatically when the clutch is depressed.

The system also features improved fuel economy by up to three per cent, bringing the car down in terms of its tax band.

Such features may be of particular interest to those who are concerned about the rising cost of petrol and driving levies in Britain at present.

Paul Willcox, UK managing director for Nissan, stated: "Anything we do to the Qashqai is always significant news for Nissan - this is our best selling model on its home turf here in the UK.

"Its continued success is great news for UK manufacturing and everyone at Nissan's Sunderland plant."

Those seeking cash for cars so they can invest in greener models and save money, as well as the environment, have an increasingly broad range of options to choose from.

Manufacturers have realised the market potential for such offerings and are rolling out vehicles that feature a plethora of green design attributes.

Earlier this summer, the government revealed plans for grants to be provided to those who wish to buy electric cars had survived spending cuts and would go ahead.

Transport secretary Philip Hammond noted the scheme will come into effect from next January in a bid to bolster the early market for eco-friendly vehicles.
