My answer is yes. The Mavericks are the least feared team out west. Some of it has to with reputation and some of it has to do with their most recent struggles this year against winning teams. Or maybe it is a combination of both. Everyone is aware of the Mavericks recent playoff failures. Most notably getting routed by Golden State in 2007 after the Mavericks had the top seed and was the defending conference champions. Lakers Matt Barnes who was on that Warriors team reminded everyone last week in his tweet, "we showed the league how to beat the Mavericks, we punked them." Translation we beat them because they were soft. Once you get that reputation it's hard to shake that. Paul Gasol still has that reputation and that's after winning back to back championships. The Mavericks toughest guys are Jason Kidd, who's 38 and has a ton of NBA miles on his legs and is slowing down, Jose Barea, but he's only 5'10 not matter what he's listed at and Shawn Marion, but he's a small forward who's can bigger guys, but he's only 6'7 and on the slender side.

Earlier this season the Mavericks went on a winning streak and won 17 out of 18 games included in those wins were some impressive road wins against the Heat, Spurs, Thunder and a few other playoff teams. It's seems like the Mavericks peeked, because they haven't beaten a playoff team in the west since mid January and that was against the Lakers when they were in middle of their winter hibernation. Since then they are 0-8 and against playoff teams out west and looking awful in the process. Some of it came be attributed to injuries, Carron Butler who is their best perimeter defender and is out for the season. Dirk Nowitzki hurt a couple of months ago and has come back and maintaining his scoring average, but he doesn't look like he's moving well and has become even more of a defensive liability. The top team's power forwards are attacking him more than ever and get's no help as far as doubling. Tyson Chandler can help, but he has to help out the Maverick guards who have been allowing a lot of guards to get in the lane recently.

In the playoffs it's comes down to half court games and defense. The Mavericks would prefer to push to ball up the court which is their strength, but that usually doesn't work in the playoffs. Their probable first round match up Portland Trailblazers recently beat the Mavericks and can't wait to play them in the first round. The Trailblazers have not been shy about it either. They are a match up nightmare because of their size up front and their guards are big and can post up the smallish Maverick guards. If the Mavericks beat the Trailblazers, they would more than likely get the Lakers and talk about a nightmare match up.

Even the most dedicated Mavericks fans don't think the Mavericks will go far in the playoffs. The only person outside the team who thinks they will not only make a deep run, but win the championship is their most ardent fan and owner Mark Cuban. Who thinks they will the championship every year.
