Of course, for those who do travel to the destination, getting stocked up with Egyptian pounds is a must. After all, they no doubt want to make the most of the shops and restaurants they come across on their adventures.

And if new research by Santander is anything to go by, individuals on Nile river cruises may be returning home with some of this cash.

The firm found that people in the UK have amassed more than 1.75 billion of leftover holiday money this year.

While around 8 million of this is discarded, 42 million will be donated to charity.

According to the firm, this surplus of cash gathered by those travelling on river Nile cruises and other vacations occurs because people overestimate how much they will spend while away on their trips.

It suggested that the typical amount brought back to the UK by holidaymakers is equivalent to 74.

Commenting on the findings, director at Santander Cards Ian Coles said: "We would always expect people to return home with some unused currency - but the amounts that people are bringing back to the UK are unnecessarily high, meaning there is an incredible amount of unused cash floating around the nation's homes."

It can be safer and more cost efficient for holidaymakers to carry only small quantities of cash with them and pay for other things using a credit card, he went on to state.

Many people may be looking to head off on foreign adventures such as Nile river cruises over coming months in order to escape the coldness of the British winter. Such individuals might want to think carefully about how much money they will take with them.
