Are you 'brand' loyal?

Are you 'brand' loyal?

Are you 'brand' loyal?

I had run out of shampoo the other day and went into my daughter's bathroom to use some of hers. Pulling back the shower curtain I was surprised at all the various shampoos and brands that she had accumulated (certainly far more than me!).

This got me thinking about brands and brand loyalty. I usually stick with a few brands. When I find something I like I don't venture far from it. Actually, some of my choices are made subconsciously. Even with laundry detergent I usually reach for the same brand, interesting enough it's the same brand my mom used (this is a whole other topic in generational branding). I got use to seeing the red box and blue lettering which symbolized clean clothes to me.

Same thing with soda. It's always been a particular brand that I've enjoyed (until recently); the blue and now silver can is refreshment.

With certain food choices it's the same way.

Is this a result of great marketing and branding or me as a consumer being in a rut and going for the tried and true?

So how can a switch be made for small businesses that have a great product or service but not brand recognition or loyalty?

How do they get people to switch or even try them out?

Going even further how would a small business get the customers and loyalty of a larger corporation such as Walmart without being dirt-cheap?

This is what I think:

1. An Introduction: Through an introduction to the new product or service by someone else you can have a convert immediately if your product/service is better or even more convenient.

I've never used the shampoo Aussie until recently when I snagged it out my daughter's bathroom, it wasn't exactly an introduction since she doesn't like to share, but it was an opportunity for another brand introduction. Now I'm using it daily and I actually like it. So much for the brand loyalty of my former shampoo!

2. Personal services and connection: When was the last time someone at Walmart remembered your name? Small businesses can exceed in this whereby the larger corporation isn't as motivated or caring.

3. Consistency in branding and messaging: You've got to get your product or service out there and make it visible. Visually it needs to have connection and impact. Ideally the visual should represent your product or services results so well that the look of it means, "What your business is all about". A strong emotional connection can be made through color.

ie: Red box, bold graphics, blue type= clean clothes.

Do you know what your brand represents?

All businesses no matter how small do have a brand or feel' behind them. Discover what it is, ask your customers/clients what they think. You're known for something and don't underestimate the value of it!
