Oddly enough, tree surgeons don't just work on matters that are strictly to do with tree surgery

, as many of them work in other related areas as well, such as giving advice on woodland management or tree removal. Strictly speaking, tree surgery is about the management of individual trees to ensure that they are healthy and safe, and this article looks at all that this entails.

Crown Thinning

When most people think of crown thinning what springs to mind is male pattern baldness, but all jokes aside thinning the crown of a tree can be useful for the tree in question as it is an effective way of allowing light to pass through the tree without altering its natural shape. Basically, this involves removing branches or leaves within the structure of the tree, rather than those on the edges.

Crown Lifting

Crown Lifting is not dissimilar to crown reduction in that it again is concerned with removing branches and leaves from the main body of the tree. However, where it differs from crown thinning is that it focuses on the removal of just the foliage at the base of the crown so that the body of the tree starts a little higher up. Again this means that more light can reach the ground beneath.

Pollarding

Pollarding was originally something that was only performed in woodland management, however its use is becoming more widespread. Essentially, pollarding is the removal of all but the tree's "skeleton" - its trunk and major branches. This allows the tree to start afresh and often the process is repeated every few years.

Hedge Cutting

Many garden hedges can be cut by the owner, however particularly high or large hedges may need the hand of a professional. What is most useful about this is that the tree surgeon is also aware of exactly how best to cut the hedge and also at which times of the year this is most beneficial, meaning that there are plenty of ways that a professional can add value in the area of hedge cutting and they should therefore be given serious consideration for the larger tasks of this nature.

As you can see there are plenty of aspects of tree surgery - in its purest sense - that concern a tree surgeon. Of course, there are other areas not mentioned - such as fruit tree pruning, limb and branch removal or clearance pruning where a tree surgeon is a worthwhile investment.
