Its means of holding items is also secure for all nature of things. Those items that are held securely in the slots have sleeves to ensure they do not slip through. The depressions for utensils are also ingeniously done with specific notches to allow easy retrieval of the individual pieces. For wheelchair users, it offers comfort via the rear part which, is fashioned out like a padded elbow rest. There is even an opening made through the tray itself that is meant for holding a napkin.

An armchair tray can be made from a number of different light weight materials including aluminium sheeting, plastic and wood. Wood provides a decoratively varnished tray that is outstanding in its finishing. Plastic ones come with ingenious depressions and folding parts and aluminium sheets is considered the plain one for rough handling.
