Around the World in 60 Days with the Ford Fiesta

The new Ford Fiesta has been getting plenty of attention in the social media world and as of late, the Fiesta fever is showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, the compact vehicle from Ford is the center of an all new hype due to the Fiesta Tour 2010. During the tour, which took place September through mid-October, journalists traveled around the globe, writing about their experiences along the way. The tour began in the United States, continued into Canada, the Middle East, China and Southeast Asia before ending in Australia.

The journey took place to further promote the launch of the new 2011 Fiesta in the United States as well celebrate the Fiesta's one millionth sale, which occurred in September 2010. Journalists were invited from the U.S., U.K. and Australia to drive the Fiesta across the globe, beginning in Los Angeles. During the two-month long expedition, journalists wrote feature stories about the more unconventional and unvisited places in each region. For instance, day one's schedule called for a visit to Hollywood's stunt driving school, a stop at Jay Leno's garage and an egg cook-off on the Fiesta bodywork in Death Valley, where temperatures soared beyond 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

During the trip, drivers were expected to cover over 15,000 miles of the open road through 20 countries on four different continents. Each region brought new adventures and surprises for the media members. According to Ford, during the American leg of the tour, the writers hung out with the team that keeps the Las Vegas lights burning, stopped in Tennessee to check out old airliners that have been converted into private homes and visited an artist in Texas who makes works of art in the dust on the windows of cars. Clearly, this was no regular tourist vacation.

During each part of the journey, the media writers used locally built cars. This means that during the European portion, the media crew drove left-hand-drive Ford Fiestas. Also to make sure repair problems were minimal, they swapped cars three times during the two-month long tour.

After the American tour ended in New York City, they went off to Europe for the second part of the journey, which began in Shannon, Ireland. The media members visited Lisdoonvarna, a village famous for its 150-year-old annual matchmaking festival as well as Dublin, where they were transported across the Irish Sea to Wales.

The 2011 Ford Fiesta Tour also treked across England and eventually reached Europe through the Channel Tunnel. Once in Europe, journalists checked out Nurburgring, which included 14 miles of weaving roads through a notorious dark forest. As the journalists traveled further east, they visted a belly dancing cab driver, found out how Saudi women influence car buying even though they aren't even allowed to drive and witnessed a race between a camel and a car.

Once the journalists made it to Shenzhen, China in their Ford Fiestas, they were able to check out one of the biggest and most bizarre electronic gadget markets today. There they saw items like a cell phone that looks like a pack of cigarettes as well as a solar powered vest that recharges personal electronics.

From there, the journey moved on to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. There the drivers met the world's most educated cab driver (who holds a PHD from Yale,) an elephant the paints and monks who bless cars.

Last but not least, the journalists traveled to Australia where they checked out legendary locations such as Darwin, Ayers Rock, Bathurst and Sydney.

The highly anticipated 2010 Ford Fiesta Tour without a doubt brought more attention to Ford's newest edition as well as provided many readers with interesting insight on the world around them. Highlighting the often overlooked places in the world in a fun way worked to Ford's advantage and to drew more attention to its product as well as engaged potential customers like it has been with its social media marketing campaign.
