Arowana - Information On Arowana Types And Breeds

The arowana fish comes in different colours and breeds depending on what part of the world the fish is found. The main areas where the different breeds of arowana are found are South America, Africa, Asia and Australia. The main colours of the arowana are red, silver, green and gold, there are other small mixtures and variations but these are the many colours.

Here I will try and explain some of the differences between the different breeds of arowana and hopefully at the end you will have a better knowledge and understanding of them.

1. Sliver Arowana.

This arowana is metallic silver in colour and is found in the amazon and the amazon basin in South America. It has a long thin flattish body with fins top and bottom leading back to a small dorsal fin. The edge of the dorsal fin may have a blueish colour. The silver arowana is considered to have the most relaxed temperament of the breeds and suits a communal tank.

2. Red Arowana

The red arowana is found in Indonesia's Kalimantan province. They normally grow to 60cm in length but are known to have reached 90cm sometimes. Known for its red scale coloration this fish comes in two colours blood red and chilli red. This arowana is the best feeder of the lot and has very strong attacks when chasing live bait. The Asian red arowana is one of the most sought after.

3. Green Arowana

The green arowana is commonly found in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Myanmar waters. It grows to between 50 - 60cm in length. This fish is very common in southeast Asia and because of this it doesn't command a very high price on the markets. This fish has small circular shaped head and its body is long and wide. Its has silvery coloured gills at the side of its head.

4. Pearl Arowana

The pearl arowana is found in the freshwater areas of northern Australia. They normally grow to between 50 - 60cm in length. The most common feature of the Australian arowana is its long slender silver body with it red spotted pattern. This fish also has an aggressive nature and should be kept in a tank on its own. It has a fully carnivorous diet so it should be fed shrimp, small fish or small frogs.

5. CrossBack Golden Arowana

This arowana is found in Malaysia, Sumatra, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. Again this arowana can grow to between 50 - 60cm in length. This fish at the adult stage gives off a bright golden shine from its scales and this attracts many collectors worldwide. When the golden arowana is young it can look a yellow greeny colour but as it gets more mature the scales take on its golden look. This arowana is also highly collectable.
