Arthroscopy and Arthroscopic Surgery, Understanding the basic concepts

, reality behind the computer assisted surgery

In simple terms Arthroscopy is just the way a surgeon looks inside any joint by means of a camera. Currently this process uses most of the sophisticated computers and equipments to observe precisely and minutely all details inside the joints. Arthroscopic Surgery commonly means a procedure that is used to look inside, diagnose and treat problems in the joints. It can be performed on any joint in the human body, but the most major joints where arthroscopic surgery is performed are shoulder, knee, elbow, hip, ankle and wrist

Shoulder and Knee Arthroscopic Surgeries are the most commonly procedures that are performed reason being the size of the joints where the instruments can be easily put into and maneuvered. However any joint can be arthroscoped, but practically it depends on the instruments and the joint where the arthroscopic surgery needs to be performed.

The surgery is very simple, a camera attached to a fiber optic light source is inserted into the joint through a small incision measuring a few millimeters. A fluid is then put inside the joint and distends the joint to allow for more visuals and pictures inside the joint and structures inside the joint. The picture inside the joint shows on a computer monitor, looking into which the surgeon performs the surgery using miniature instruments which may be as small as 1 or 2 millimeters.

Most patients prefer arthroscopic surgery over traditional surgery, because of faster recovery, small incisions and very less painful. Traditional surgery may take a longer duration to perform and heal, but arthroscopic surgery requires relatively lesser time to perform and also to heal. Moreover its somewhat painless or the pain associated is relatively very less for which it is highly preferred.

Computer assisted methods and innovations in joint replacement surgery improve the precision and accuracy of implant positioning and ligament balancing, producing better medical results which improve the life of the implants. The factors that affect prosthetic lifespan vary. One of the most important factors is the accuracy of prosthesis placement and the restoration of surrounding muscle and ligament balance. This relies mostly on the orthopedic surgeon's skill and judgment. However, research has shown that incorrect placement still occur even with the most skilled and experienced surgeons. The chance for incorrect prosthetic placement will be greater in a less skilled or inexperienced surgeon. Therefore, computer technology has been introduced to assist in more accurate positioning of prosthetic components, allowing the surgeons to make a number of informed decisions intra operatively and go for a precise prosthetic placement. With Computer Guided Surgery the surgeon has a greater vision and level of accuracy during surgery.

Computer assisted surgery is undoubtedly one of the best methods for a surgeon to perform quite complicated joint replacement surgeries, which supports the decision making and enhances the surgeon's flexibility to accommodate individual variation in knees of different people. During the surgery, the surgeon has mostly gets one chance to make a correct cut.

In short arthroscopy and arthroscopic surgery are highly preferred mode of joint surgeries.
