Arthur River is exposed to the full force of the Roaring Forties

There are many spectacular wilderness areas in the world, but none of them are more spectacular than Arthur River, Tasmania. If you long for a true wilderness experience but lack the time or ability to make a long trek on foot, then Arthur River is just for you. Located on the northwest tip of Tasmania, Arthur River is exposed to the full force of the Roaring Forties. It is definitely not the place to go if you are looking for a tropical resort, but if you are looking for adventure, it will give you everything you want.

Your adventure will usually begin from Launceston Tasmania. Then you will take the Western Explorer route from Launceston to Arthur River. It is a remarkably short trip, bearing in mind that you will be going from cosmopolitan Launceston to virtually untrammeled wilderness. The drive of 181 miles (292 kilometers) only takes about 4 hours when the weather is good and even though the road is not sealed in places, it is a good road. It is advisable to take some wet weather clothes and a few extra layers as the weather here can get fairly extreme, just in case a storm kicks up.

Once you arrive in Arthur River, you will find you are in a settlement rather than a town. The most recent census put the total population of the settlement at 121, so don't expect to find much of anything except what you came to see: unspoiled wilderness. You will find that in abundance.

Brian Inder, who is known as one of the first Tasmanians to actively promote tourism in the State, referred to the northwest coast as the "Edge of the World" described it perfectly. There is a plaque at the mouth of the Arthur River that has his poem engraved in it. After tossing a pebble onto the beach, he wrote: Mute witness for the aeons/That today I came and stood/At the edge of the world. Arthur River inspires such thoughts.

What will you actually find when you reach Arthur River? Well, for one thing, it is the gateway to the magnificent Tarkine Wilderness, the biggest unprotected wilderness in Tasmania, a state that is virtually half wilderness. What is a wilderness? It is an area that is in pristine ecological condition and has suffered little damage due to the encroachment of man. The Tarkine Wilderness includes many areas that strictly adhere to that definition. Thankfully, now that the area is in the process of being considered a National Park, there is little danger of logging, mining or other commercial operations spoiling its natural beauty.

Don't let the Roaring Forties, the tiny population of Arthur River or the vast wilderness surrounding it put you off. The primary industry in the little settlement is tourism. You will discover well-maintained campgrounds there and in fact can find a comfortable Arthur River accommodation if you prefer the comforts of home. You can even explore the Arthur River in safety and comfort on an Arthur River Cruiise. You won't find the same level of luxury that you will find in our Launceston accommodation, but you will find a magical wilderness experience that you will never forget.
