Make use of an attention-grabbing headline. The headline can make the difference between your article being read or not. It really is that powerful so it is worth taking some time to get it right. Headlines which ask a question, start with the words "How to" or promise: "Three ways to" are used widely. The headline should be to the point and appeal to the reader's emotion.
Don't be afraid to use short sentences. Short sentences are very easy to read. Just don't use them all the time. Overuse of this tactic is annoying. Really annoying. Seriously though, a short sentence can be used to create impact and make your message really easy to understand. If you find yourself writing many long sentences containing multiple ideas, then consider breaking them down into two or more shorter sentences. A large block of text just looks difficult to read even if it is actually quite simple and will cause many readers to give up and stop reading.
Bullets are your friends. No not ammunition but those big black blobs which are used when the writer wants to make a series of quick points. (Just like you see in this sequence here.) Bullets are particularly useful when the information you are trying to convey naturally breaks down into a series of separate points.
Use Sub-headings to break up your paragraphs on the page. If your article is particularly long then use sub-headings to break it down into sections. At the start of each section use a sub-heading of a couple of words to summarise that section. This allows the reader to get a general overview of your article while helping keep their attention focused to the end.
Write for one person at a time. Imagine that you are writing for an audience of one and keep that person in mind as you write your article. If you feel that you are straying from the point or including material your ideal reader would not be interested in then delete that section and get back on track. End your article when you have finished what you have to say. Don't pad it out just to make it longer as your readers will know you have run out of steam.
Use facts and figures to back up what you are saying but never make things up in an attempt to justify what you write. If you do use facts and figures in your articles then make sure they are accurate otherwise your credibility will be lost. You may also use your own personal insights, where relevant, to help cement your status as an expert in your niche.
You don't have to use all of the above points in every article you write but by taking care to make your articles easy to read and understand you really will help make your work stand out and be noticed.
