Article Marketing Strategies: How To Increase Website Traffic

In this article I'll address a few very common beginner questions that will hopefully help you understand how article marketing can help you increase website traffic.

1 - What is the goal with article marketing? How can submitting articles increase my website traffic?

The ultimate goal with article marketing is to help your website get a higher ranking in Google (and the other search engines). When your website is ranked higher, then more traffic will be funneled to your site.

This answer creates a new question...

2 - What does it mean to "get a higher ranking in Google"?

This is an excellent question, one that I think many newcomers gloss over. What exactly are you trying to get a higher ranking for?

First of all, think about who you want to come to your website. You don't want just any person showing up. You really want people who might be interested in your services or products. These are the types of people that you're trying to attract to your website. They are your target market.

Imagine this ideal person from your target market. What does he or she need? What are his problems? What questions is she asking?

You may not know it, but the members of your target market are similar to each other. When they go to Google and do searches, they are searching for similar things. They are typing similar phrases into Google.

When you're marketing your website, it's important for you to do research to discover what are the common phrases that your target customers are typing into Google. These phrases are called "keywords", and once you know them you can use them in your article submissions--in the titles, in the articles themselves, and in your resource boxes (that's the author bio with a link to your website that sits at the end of your article).

By aligning the content you create with the types of information that the people in your target market are looking for, you are helping Google to associate your website with those keywords.

The goal is that when people search for those keywords, that pages on your website show up high in the search engine results pages (aka "the rankings").

3 - How many people will be reading my articles?

This is a very common question, and it stems from the mistaken idea that the traffic you'll get from article marketing comes from the articles themselves.

I can see how you would think that--you submit the article, it gets published on multiple websites, and people read your article on those various websites. They like your article and so they look at the "resource box" for more information about you and perhaps other information on that topic. They see the link to your website and they click it. That is one way that you can get more people coming to your site through article marketing, but it's actually not the main way that traffic will reach you.

The main way that you'll get more traffic is from the search engines, like Google. As I mentioned above, your goal is to align the articles that you create with the type of content that your target market is looking for. This helps Google to associate your website with those keywords.

Then when people from your target market do a search in Google for one of those popular topics, your website shows up high in the rankings. You probably already know this-the web pages that are in the top spots on the results pages get the most visitors. The #1 position in the search results gets the most visitors by far.

So, when you're doing article marketing, you don't have to lure people to your articles in order to get the increase in traffic. No, instead you use your articles to get a higher ranking for your web pages, then people find your site when they do searches in Google for your keyword terms.

I hope this helps explain a little about how article marketing produces website traffic. I know it's a little confusing at first, but once you get the main facts in place, you'll be able to build on your knowledge over time. Don't worry about how many people are reading your articles. Instead, focus on creating quality articles that address the needs of your target market.
