Article Marketing: The Importance Of Keywords

Keywords are crucially important to your success and should form the foundation of your entire article marketing effort

. If you don't make proper efforts to use keywords for your article marketing campaign, at worst you will seriously undermine your efforts, and at best you will simply not be taking advantage of every benefit that article marketing offers. We'll look at two types of keywords that you should use as the foundation of your article marketing:Main keywords: These are the keywords for which you would like the front page of your website to achieve a high ranking in the search engines, particularly Google. These search terms are typically two to three words long and entail a high traffic potential. Along with the high traffic potential, you also have a relatively high number of websites competing with you. This is simply because keywords that have the most potential traffic attract greater competition. That often means that it is more time consuming (takes more effort on a longer consistent basis) to rank highly for these keyword terms, but the rewards are significant.Peripheral keywords: These keywords (often called long-tail keywords) are usually 4 words long or more. They have lower traffic potential, but it can also be easier to rank highly for these terms due to the lower levels of competition.Let us take a more detailed look at each keyword type:Main Keywords:These should be used in your HTML resource box as anchor text to link back to your website. When you link specific phrases back to your website, it helps indicate to Google what your website is about. This also helps Google determine the ranking of your site in their index. When you are consistently using your main keywords in your HTML resource box, and using them as anchor text to link through to your site, you should start to see improvements in the ranking of your site on Google for your main keyword terms. Of course having a website that provides quality content on the topic of the keyword terms you're attempting to rank well for plays a significant part in getting a better search engine ranking. You will see your most dramatic impact on your article marketing campaign by improving the ranking for your main keywords. By moving your website from the second page of the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) to the 1st page, the impact on traffic is likely to be significant. When you do article marketing correctly, you can shoot for the ultimate goal of the number 1 position.Your Peripheral Keywords:These keyword phrases don't tend to give you enough traffic potential to justify focussing on getting your website to rank well for these terms, but they are perfect topics for your articles. The idea is that your article (rather than your site itself) would rank well for these keywords, aiming towards getting the reader to click to read your article and then click through to your website via the link in the resource box.The competition on these terms is usually so low that it is very easy to get a high position in the SEs for them. What's more, these longer phrases also often make perfect article titles. So Why Do Keyword Research?Let's say that you are an electrician, and you are using article marketing to draw traffic to your site. With just a few minutes of research on what people in your target market are looking for on the search engines, you will discover that there is a dramatic difference between the following 2 very similar keywords - only 1 word in them is different:"how much would it cost to rewire a house" - 48,600 competing web pages, but just 28 searches per month"how much does it cost to rewire a house" - 51,500 competing web pages, 480 searches per month(Statistics from Google, and Google's keyword tool, at time of writing)While the competition between these terms are very similar, the second phrase has far higher potential for traffic. As you can see it would be far more productive to write an article called How Much Does It Cost To Rewire A House rather than How Much Would It Cost To Rewire A House. The first title has seventeen times greater the amount of potential traffic than the second. Keywords play a significant role in your success when you're marketing with articles. Spending a short period of time doing some simple research before writing your articles can have a big impact!
