Artificial Grass - Why is it so popular?

Artificial Grass is a product that is manufactured using synthetic fibres which is made to look like real grass. It was originally used for sports surfacing particularly in geographic areas that were not easily able to grow grass due to climatic conditions. The synthetic grass replicated some of the features of natural grass and provided a clean, safe surface area to play many types of sport on. These artificial sports pitches enabled countries which suffered with extreme heat and water shortages to pursue sporting activities that they would have otherwise found difficulty doing. The more arid parts of the South American States hosted spectacular sporting events on these pitches and it became quickly acceptable to provide these 'all weather' facilities in other parts of the world. That was back in 1965.

Today manufacturers worldwide provide an array of natural looking products for both sports & leisure surfacing to landscape products for use in our gardens. As we briefly run through the different types of these artificial grasses we find a common thread associating them; that is low maintenance. It's not necessarily that we have become so lazy that we struggle to mow our lawns, but constrictions on time, unsuitable ground for growing real grass and this insatiable appetitie for that 'perfect lawn' could be contributing factors.

From the solid green, short tufted grass that may be more suited to display fruit & vegetables on outside out local grocers, we can now readily purchase longer pile grass with natural looking 'blades'. There is artificial grass with straight fibres mixed with curled yarns which provide a real thatch look, then there is grass with a curled beige & brown thatch effect, probably the closest to our everyday English lawn. These days it really is difficult to differentiate from a quality artificial grass and a natural lawn, however the benefits are considerable.

Imagine that your back yard, garden or the space surrounding your business is shaded and dull, artificial grass would be the solution to brighten up this area with the following benefits. It is low maintenance, this does not mean no maintenance but the time spent tendering to your lawn will be considerably reduced. Leaves, twigs and any debris will need to be blown off the lawn or brushed up; but mowing, watering, fertilizing and airating your lawn will be a thing of the past.

Dependant on the type of grass you choose, a clean cut finish will be apparent all year round. Artificial grass is pet friendly and easily cleanable, that includes dog mess. The easy clean surface can be washed down so any spillages and mess can be washed off using warm water and a mild household detergent. Many people and organisations are using these products for pet runs and training areas; even Crufts use these type of surfaces.

Throughout 2010 the popularity in artificial grass for landscaping mushroomed; from a steady stream of roof terraces and balconies in the London area we are seeing an incredible demand for larger gardens throughout the Country. Garden lovers both young & old are improving their outdoor space and gardens with these low maintenance alternatives. The advantages of no watering, no use of pesticides and no petrol mowers help the environment as well as keeping the costs down of ongoing maintenance. Synthetic turf can easily be recycled by granulation in the same way that carpets and pvc cushionfloor can; this can only be done with surfaces that are not sand filled. The end use of the granulated material tends to fullfill needs within the equestrian sector for training areas and show rings.

Pretty much all artificial grass fibres are UV stabilised to prevent fading and most grasses will last from 10 - 15 years. Families have found that a clean yet robust surface is great for the children to play on & it comes without the mud. So all in all these artificial lawns are most definately gaining popularity and will continue to do so. Like garden decking, the large DIY outlets will be running artificial grass for the coming season, Spring 2011; but like everything nowadays there will be more choice from a quick search on the internet and probably at better prices too.
