Artificial sweeteners:Are Artificial Sweeteners Really Safe
?
Artificial sweeteners are compounds that offer the sweetness of sugar without adding calories or elevating blood sugar, making them useful for people who have diabetes or who are trying to lose weight. Their sweetness ranges from 200 to 13,000 times sweeter than regular table sugar.
So Some people choose to use artificial sweeteners as a way to enjoy their favourite foods without as many calories or elevating blood sugar. but are they healthy, and do they actually help you lose weight?
Are artificial sweeteners really safe? Whether artificial sweeteners are a safe alternative to sugar or not, has always been a matter of controversy. Some studies have suggested that they cause cancer, allergies, and other health problems, while other studies question those findings.
It's also unclear whether eating sugarfree foods can actually help people control their weight. Artificial sweeteners were created to trick the body into thinking it was getting something sweet. However, the body is never really tricked.
Artificial sweeteners stimulate the same cells in our tongues as sugar does. Thanks to the substitutes' chemistry, however, they are hundreds to tens of thousands of times as sweet as sugar. That means that far less of them is required to make something taste sweet.
People with a disease called diabetes also often turn to artificial sweeteners because these products don't raise levels of sugar in the blood.
Keep in mind that some foods containing artificial sweeteners, such as sugar-free yoghurt, can still affect your blood sugar level due to other carbohydrates or proteins in the food. Some foods labelled "sugar-free" such as sugar-free cookies and chocolates may contain sweeteners, such as sorbitol or mannitol, which contain calories and can affect your blood sugar level. Some sugar-free products may also contain flour, which will raise blood sugar levels. Also, remember that foods containing sugar substitutes may also contain calories that may undermine your ability to lose weight and control blood sugar.
However, consuming excess artificial sweeteners can bring negatif effect on your health. Try to eliminate artificial sweeteners from your diet. They are nonnutritive.
