Artist Materials To Express Your Creativity
There is a wide range of artist materials on the market today
. Each type can be used to create a variety of individual effects, using a diversity of textures and colors to create innovative expressions of personal talent. The artist is literally limited only by his imagination thanks to the variety of materials on offer.
The hardest thing to choose will be your materials. Do you like to work with chalk on paper, with pastels, crayons, water colors, acrylic paints or even oil paints. Working on canvas is quite different to using paint on paper. There are a variety of brushes, made from various types of bristles and these can vary in thickness from just a few hairs to brushes wider than the palm of a mans hand.
The earliest pigments were used by our ancestral peoples, when they would depict the story of great hunts or other important events in their history by painting symbols on their cave walls. Pigments were created from ground iron oxide, manganese, chalk and iron ore. These early artists would use interesting techniques, like chewing coal into a fine dust and mixing it with their saliva before applying it by pursing their lips and literally spitting the color onto their natural canvas.
Techniques have evolved greatly since then. As have the quality of the artists materials available today. Companies have spent small fortunes on researching products that will provide the finest quality for their users and have devised formulations that will keep their color for many years.
For those wishing to paint on silks and textiles, specialized silk and textile paints have been specifically created as regular oil paints would be too heavy for this delicate material. Fabric painting has become a popular pastime and there is a wide selection of colors available for you to choose from.
Many artists use a product called gouache, a liquid gum product that is mixed with pigment for improved viscosity and to hasten the drying time of traditional oil paints. Oil and acrylic paints are traditionally applied to canvases, squares of material that are pulled taut and nailed to a frame before being primed with a base coat.
Other options include working with chalks, water colors and inks which are traditionally used on a special type of paper designed for this. Whether you choose paint on canvas or ink on paper, each technique can take time to master with each artist finding their own unique methods of application. Working with colored pencils is also a very popular option.
Many artists opt to use what is referred to as mixed media, where they will combine a variety of products. Chalk pastels, oil pastels and various paint mediums are combined with other materials. Artists can improvise and add ribbons, wooden veneers, natural materials like bark, shells, sea sand or even beads to an artwork.
