As Winter Approaches, Ensure you are Safe on the Roads
As summer is now officially over and Winter well on its way the weather is obviously going to be changing. Drivers are going to have to consider this when out on the roads as they will need to adjust to the conditions that come with this time of year. The roads are going to be a much more dangerous place to be due to weather affecting the roads and the vision of the drivers on them. To ensure that accidents are avoided everyone will have to ensure that they take more care whilst out on the roads and be aware of the affects the weather is having.
With winter, as we all know, comes a lot of rain which may be a direct contrast to what drivers became used to over the summer months on the roads. One thing that you may find happening when there is a lot of rain is water between the tyres of your car and the road surface causing your steering to feel light and limiting the control you have over your car, this is commonly known as aqua planning. If you ever find you are in this situation be sure to stay away from steering, braking or accelerating. The way to get back in control is to simply ease off the accelerator slightly and let your car gradually slow down helping your tyres to cope. To avoid getting yourself in this situation in the first place ensure that you have good tyres with plenty of tread. Driving at slower speeds in these weather conditions will make the roads a much safer place for not only you but everybody out on the roads.
Driving in the snow can also be very dangerous for road users and everyone must take extra care. Ice is sometimes concealed below fresh snow that has fallen making the roads unsafe. During extreme weather conditions, such as heavy snow, if you don't actually have to make a journey then don't and stay at home. A tip when driving in these conditions is to try to keep your car moving at all times at a slow speed, if your car does stop you may have trouble getting it to move again. If you ever find yourself stuck in snow you should not leave your engine running without checking that your exhaust is clear as if it is not the gases from your exhaust may enter your car.
Fog is another condition that comes with winter that can cause trouble on the roads. You must ensure to only use your fog lights when visibility is less that 100meters as your lights could dazzle other drivers on the roads. Stopping distances are also very important when driving in fog , you must never assume that the car in front of you will give you warning when they are going to stop so by making sure you can stop safely will help avoid unnecessary accidents.
So make sure you are fully prepared for the weather conditions that we are all faced with in the winter months. Not only your safety is at risk but everybody on the roads at this time so be prepared.
