If you use a vacuum to collect the dust you risk doing more harm than good as the particles will be dispersed into the air surrounding.
Mechanics who fit and repair brakes and clutches risk suffering heavy exposure to asbestos and use of a hoover can make matters much worse as the fibres will be dispersed through the air faster.
Besides the above risks mechanics can also get asbestos containing materials on their hands and risk swallowing them whilst eating. Once asbestos is released into the air it lingers and can therefore be breathed in by anybody in the vicinity. It is also possible that the mechanic will carry asbestos related dust home on their clothes which is a risk to the people living with them.
Garages that do five or more brake jobs each year in America are subject to government regulations which require specialist equipment that reduces the exposure. One method involves the mechanic using a special transparent cover and a special vacuum that has a HEPA air filter. Another measure is to use a spray system that dampens the brake assembly.
No matter what other method is used it is vital to always be extra careful if you are a mechanic. Asbestos is extremely dangerous to humans and can cause disease decades later.
