The Asgiri Raja Maha Viharaya and the Malwatu Maha Viharaya are the main monasteries of Theravada Buddhism in the country. Both are located in the hill city of Kandy, favoured by many tourists for its pleasant weather and natural beauty. The Asgiri temple is thought to be the older of the two and it is believed that nearly all Kandyan kings played some role in its development. The temple is home to the monks of the Siyam Nikaya (Nikaya means order) who have acted as guardians of the Tooth Relic during turbulent times. It was a commander of Parakrambahu IVs army, Commander Siriwardhana, who was responsible for building the original temple.

Another temple was built alongside the original temple by another military commander of the last kingdom of Kandy, Urulewatte Wijesundara Rajakaruna Seneviratne. Both temples are collectively referred to as the Asgiri Raja Maha Viharaya. The temple is famous for its Gedige Viharaya or cremation grounds where Queen Chandrawathies remains were burnt. The structure is composed of three Maluwas or terraces and the last rites of many members of the royal family were performed in the middle terrace.
