Asian Games 2010 Guangzhou | 16th Asian Games

part of the worldwide Olympic movement and governed bythe Olympic Council of Asia is pleased to present this preview of the all-new new andrenovated venues currently under construction for the Games.

Architectural work is being spearheaded by Pan Yong, Deputy General Architect (and associate Lin Dongna) of the Guangdong Architectural Design and Research Institute andSun Yimin, Deputy Director of the School of Architecture of SouthChina University of Technology. Asian Games 2010 Live Stream

The brand new venues being built for the Games, as well as its design and construction, have taken into consideration not only the requirements of competition at The 16th AsianGames but also the urban development of Guangzhou with emphasis of blending these new facilities into the surrounding environment, the utilization of new technologiesand embodiment of the Chinese Lingnan culture.

At the last Asian Games in Doha 2006, India chose to save funds and withdraw its Men's basketball team at the last moment due to the belief that they couldn't compete for a medal. However, since the cancellation occurred at the last minute, India's games were made official and they were registered as forfeits, both games scored 20 0 in the books. This time, India will be sending their top group of players, with months of time to prepare beforehand, and with a Elite team of USA/NBA Coaches to prepare us.

Based on past performance, the experts have chosen China, Iran, Lebanon, Korea, Jordan and Philippines as favorites. However, most nations are treating this tournament as a training ground for their younger players. Only 3 or 4 teams will be sending their "A" players. Of those, the Philippines might be the team to watch out for in this tournament with their Smart Gilas squad.

The top 8 team from 2006 Asian Games were automatically sent onto the second round. The remaining teams have to win a game to advance to the second round.

Via Wikipedia: "The Philippines, which has made it to the latter stages of every Asian Games basketball tournament from 1951 to 2002, was suspended from international competition during the 2006 Asian Games and was not automatically seeded. In 2010, they were originally drawn with Saudi Arabia but Saudi Arabia withdrew. Kuwait, which was originally drawn with Hong Kong and DPR Korea, was re-drawn with the Philippines, also reportedly withdrew due to a suspension. As a result, the organizers will re-draw the seven unseeded teams into two groups. The Philippines is planning to appeal the re-draw among the seven unseeded teams and instead suggests to conduct the re-draw involving all participating teams"

There might be a change to the format, but for now lets assume that India has to beat Afghanistan to advance or else go home. Here is my scouting report on Afghanistan. Afghanistan is a nation in extreme turmoil. The basketball program was started in 2005 after being non-existent before then. They appointed as coach a native born Afghan named Memo Rafiq, who had earned a Division 1 scholarship to play at Idaho State.

After only one year of the program being created, they competed at 2006 Asian Games and defeated Hong Kong in their first game, before losing to Syria. They then won the 2010 South Asian Games beating India in two close contests. Afghanistan's team has several native US citizens of Afghan descent on it's roster. No player is over 6'7". Nafi Dashiki is the player who made the shot that defeated India last time. He plays semi pro basketball in the USA for the New York Thunder of the ABA League.

Once again, the Afghan team is made up of several Afghani players who live in the USA and several who live in Afghanistan. The players have regular jobs, practice on their own time and get together about one month before competition to train together with little support. They are going up against our Indian Team which is fully funded and supported by our Basketball Federation going back many years. In addition to this, we have hired the best coaches from the USA, connected with the NBA, and we have been preparing for months before the tournament, knowing who our first opponent will be. We will field our strongest contingent of players. Based on the these factors I think India will prevail in a close match
