Ask Your Doctor Before Going Ahead with Sexual Relations When Pregnant

In safe pregnancies, sexual relations with the husband or partner are safe

. Normally there should be no cause for concern; however, it is always best to consult with the doctor if it is alright to go ahead and sexual activities up to a certain month in pregnancy. This is for a normal pregnancy, not for high risk pregnancies.

Normally, sex and pregnancy don't mix when the woman is feeling nauseous. Then there is the urinary frequency which could dampen the arousal, and then the tender breasts which get painful when touched. These can cause the sexual drive to drop, literally.

Then the woman just gets plain too tired. Any increase in physical activity like sex is draining especially if she still has to do chores during the day. If the woman gets too tired, she can endanger the pregnancy. Normally sexual activities will not cause a woman to miscarry, unless she is physically fatigued, or has bleeding and cramping.

Sex during the last trimester is difficult too. The sexual drive is dampened considerably because of hormonal changes, the woman gets fatigued quite easily because of the weight of the fetus, and body movements during lovemaking can become tiring and the woman may just want to avoid all sexual activities altogether.

High risk pregnancies are women who are pregnant but have had a history of spontaneous abortion, placenta previa, vaginal bleeding, or the woman is carrying more than one fetus as in twins, triplets, and octuplets.

For high risk pregnancies, the doctor can advice the couple to continue on normally, but most would not advice it especially if there is bleeding involved. In most cases, the women are not even allowed to get tired, exercise, exert themselves in any way physically, some women are even instructed TBR total bed rest literally the woman is not allowed to get off the bed and must remain there till the day of the birth of the child. Moving the woman may cause her to miscarry, at any given time.

The only advice that can be given to a couple, especially the man, is to consider how the woman feels about lovemaking when she is pregnant. It is not every day that pregnant women are fatigued; there are days when they can get aroused very easily. Be open to one another and talk about the benefits of lovemaking with the partner. Remember, a partner who understands is a better lover, whether pregnant or not.
