ASP was invented by Aspect Software Engineering in 1995

. ASP hosting means having an ASP server which gives the ability to host Active Server Pages within a website. This was invented mainly for allowing applications that are written in ASP to execute directly on the asp web hosting server. This leads to faster web page response time. Using applications of programs and running them directly on the asp web server is called side-scripting. This is different from client-side scripting where the code is executed using the web browser or the user's computer.

Application Object: This refers to the ability to group a number of asp files on the hosting server into a group of asp functions that can be executed.

Error Object: This object was introduced in the ASP version 3.0. It gives detailed error reporting which can occur when an asp hosted script is run.

ASP is also a software development environment. Hence, it offers you support fir VBScript and JScript including HTML scripts and reusable Activex server components.

ASP.Net that was created by Microsoft has taken off from where ASP hosting left off. Using ASP.net means using asp web pages that use the .Net framework and have an asp hosted page end with an .aspx extention. These pages are compiled on the asp hosting server. This means that they can be run on each asp server without having to be interpreted first. This means that they run faster and more efficiently than they would if they were running as a script on the asp server.

The main drawback of the asp side-scripting is that the code needs to be interpreted into a language for the asp hosting server to be able to execute.
