Aspirants Give First Preference To Gmat

A new review shows that a common of MBA applicants still choose for GMAT even as GRE is accepted by some business schools

. 55 percent of survey respondents said they would take the GMAT as against 12 percent when asked what they would most likely take if their top preference schools would accept either one. While 12 percent said they would take both.

Although respondents felt GMAT was more difficult of the two exams, majority reported a preference for GMAT. It was established that of the 300 aspiring MBAs surveyed in January and February 2010, 47 percent considered the GMAT to be tougher than the GRE.

The Educational Testing Services (ETS) which owns the GRE are taking efforts to make its exam an attractive option for business school admissions. The test alterations would make the exam more complex. The announced changes have made GRE more attractive to business schools, making it gain wide acceptance with many competitive MBA programs.

The latest GRE will have multiple answer questions in each the verbal and math subdivisions of the test where test takers will have to opt all answers that correctly apply rather than just one. In the verbal section, one has to select two answer choices out of six that would correctly complete a given sentence in sentence equivalence questions. For math questions, test takers have to provide the correct numeric answer with no choices specified. The new GRE will be administered as a Multi-Stage Test (MST) from August 1, 2011. A computer adaptive test, it allows test takers to skip around within individual sections.

Despite all these changes, the GMAT is favored over the GRE by prospective business school applicants. Since majority of the summit business schools still consider only GMAT and are at this time reported not planning to accept the GRE. Hence, in a way, aspiring MBAs, who only take the GRE, limit their options.
