Assassin's Creed Review -An Epic Game Built on a Solid Story
Assassin's Creed has come and gone and a lot of people I believe have already enjoyed this game
. This is already considered part of the Greatest Hits Collection and there is a reason why. I won't go to in depth into the story because there may be many that haven't played this great title. So I'll give a quick summary and then go into the exposition or the meat of the review.
Quick Summary:
You are an elite Assassin called Altair that's part of a Brotherhood of Assassins during the 12th Century as part of the 3rd Crusade in the Holy Land. (A little bit of history here being referred and this is the shining point of the game for anyone into some cool movie like stories.) Your job is to bring justice to this corrupt world by assassinating nine influential men. However, this leads to an even bigger secret within.
With this in mind, you take off and try to complete your missions. What is revolutionary is that there is more to this story that what I'm saying and you have to play to find out. I won't spoil it for you and this is the reason why many are excited that the direct sequel is releasing this coming year.
Gameplay is fluid and flows seamlessly. This fluid gameplay gets you involved quickly into the story and immersed in it as well. The story is exceptionally well written and wants you craving more. Audio is just reminiscent of that time frame and hits you at the right moment when you feel like you're being hunted.
Pros:
* Fun climbing rooftops or anything that is styled like Prince of Persia, but a lot simpler.
* EXCITING.
* Nice combos and counter moves to hold your own with the enemy.
* Visual representation of this time period is just sheer beauty.
* Travel by Horse is sweet.
Cons:
* Enemy AI is not the brightest.
* It may be a bit repetitive to some
* I wish it didn't end.

Story: 10 / 10
Okay if you read through the quick summary it is basically the same thing, so I'll skip ahead to the next part. If anything is mentioned besides what the main story is about, you'll be in for a BIG SHOCK. Seriously, this is what got me hooked from beginning to the end. If I mention any more than that I would be spoiling one of the greatest moments of story telling (to me) within a game. This story speaks EPIC-ness to me and possibly to others. Yes "Epic-ness" is not a word, but I made it up. Hopefully the dictionary catches on to this sweet phrase.
At the start of the game, you have it all, including this ability to detect who are the bad guys, good guys and possible individuals that could give you information. You also have a big sword, combat skills and secret knives for silent killing. You are agile and elite, but in time you are stripped of your abilities and most of your weapons and have to work up the ranks through assassinations to get everything back. This almost plays in the same style Metroid does when you lose your weapons and abilities and have to earn them back over time. Something I enjoy till this day.
Gameplay: 8 / 10
Now the gameplay is very simple that your younger brother could pick it up. This is a Mature game I would like to add, so to parents, so caution is forewarned, but I know sometimes to others it may not matter. I just wanted to point this out.
With that said, the game also feels like it has that Prince of Persia feeling, but it pulls off the moves a lot smoother and with great animation. Combos, counters, weapons are well tailored in that they provide you with that feeling that YOU are Altair in the game.
View article images hereThe AI however is not that smart. It plays like those old Kung Fu movies when ten guys surround the hero and only one attacks the hero one at a time. After each time you kill the enemy, another one lines up for you to slice and dice. Some may find this repetitive and non-thrilling, but not me. Call me a sadist if you want, but I enjoyed it IMMENSELY.
Now, I would like let you know, there is no variety in the missions that you accomplish. You have to gain information on where this individual is by the means they give you and assassinate that guy. This repeats every single time for nine times. Many found this EXTREMELY boring and repetitive, but I found it quite alright. I didn't find any issues with this because it was mainly the appetizer for what I really wanted, INFORMATION to the STORY.
They give you a horse for fast travel between cities, hiding abilities through hay, walking slowly to blend with the crowd or monks and sitting on benches: (which doesn't work if your being chased very closely. LOL I tried). It has somewhat of a sandbox feel, but it's limited to what they give you. They give you the core missions to progress the story, but you have side missions to enhance the story, if you so wish. The side missions aren't detriment to complete the story, but serve as a form of replay value if you want.
However, I found it odd that you couldn't swim when you jump in water. This lack of swimming could be nothing really, but it was intriguing that it wasn't possible. I guess with all that equipment an assassin could swim and would be detected quickly . This isn't a big deal because water doesn't play a big issue into the game, so it is easily overlooked. Even with everything mentioned, its elements blend seamlessly to give you an experience you'll never forget.
I played with the excitement of a five year old that was listening in on a great story and thought they were the main star. I enjoyed this feeling to the end of the game and sadly the experience only left me wanting more.
Graphics: 10 / 10
The graphics to this game speak highly of the attention to detail that Ubisoft has with their IP (Intellectual Properties) and how they will do their best to get you involved visually. There isn't much I can't say about this game then YOWZA!!!. You'll notice this effect when you pull off your first kill. It's gruesome, but seems delightful (in a weird way ).
Challenge: 7 / 10
Assassin's Creed isn't really that difficult to pull off moves or to beat the game at its normal setting. I did find it however challenging to pull off counter moves, as my timing was never right. You may have issues at times trying to find a way to make that ledge or avoid some guards, but that makes it fun and a bit challenging.
So, I know it sounded like I contradicted myself, so let me explain. It is challenging because it makes you want to think like an assassin to find the best route at times to go for a kill, but it isn't that hard that you couldn't beat the game with 20 hours or so. You could probably beat it in 12-15 hours, but that's if you speed through this and don't do side missions.
Sadly, there really isn't any replay value, unless you're an achievement or trophy junkie and want to go back to collect a few odds and ends. I don't know if trophies were released for this, but I mentioned it anyway, just in case. There is something that happens at the end that leaves you wanting more and they give you a hint there is more coming.
Final Rating: 8.75 / 10
The game still plays well to many people. The only downside is that the variations to complete your missions becomes the same thing over and over. Many may like this style, while others would find it extremely boring, dull, and repetitive. I didn't mind this though because I was simply engrossed in the story.
I shall say that if you haven't played this and it still doesn't sound like your type of game, give it a RENT and you just may enjoy the story so much you'll overlook everything else.
As for me, I say this is a KEEPER, because it did things in storytelling in games and movies I have never seen before done till this day.
