Assembling a Futon by:Thomas Mathews
Almost all the futons are made very similar and use the same parts to assemble them
. Hence, when shoppers buy their futon they often have a set of instructions that came with the futon frame. Let's see how we can assemble a Futon right from the scratch.
First, layout and identify all of your parts. There should be a seat, a back section, two rails and two arms. There should also be four nylon rollers, six washers, six cotter clips, six metal pins eight barrel nuts, eight bolts and in some cases kicker blocks.
Before you start, make sure that you have a Phillips screwdriver and an Allen wrench.
Place the arms with the routed out grooves facing each other. Now, align the stretcher rail with the drilled holes in the futon arms, insert the two bolts through the holes and then insert the barrel nuts into the pre-drilled hole in the rail. Secure the bolts with an Allen wrench and loosely tighten.
After that, locate the three holes drilled into the back rack. Then, take the nylon rollers and push a metal pin through the smaller end then insert the assembly into the holes on the back rack. Place one of the washers over each pin and secure with a cotter clip.
Now, you need to connect the back rack to the seat. So, line up the holes on the seat section with those on the back rack and push a metal pin through each role from the outside. Fix a washer with the cotter clip two pins. The seat and back rack assembly can now be moved between the arms and lined up with the routed out grooves in the arms. The back stretcher now connects to the alms with two bolts on each side and the barrel nuts are inserted into the holes in the stretcher rail. Tighten the bolts with an Allen wrench. Tighten all the bolts as much as possible and your futon is now ready to use. Some futons also have kick blocks which are attached to the seats. These can be attached by putting a metal pin into each blog and attaching them to the side of the seat, securing with washer and a cotter clip.
These instructions can be very handy if you do not have the basic set of assembly instructions for a futon. You get hands on experience of how to put together the entire futon and thus it will be easier for you fit and repair your furniture whenever needed.
