Assessing Your Affiliate Marketing Competition - Planning Your Attack
When it comes to choosing the right niche to target
, it's not enough to simply find something that you're interested in that doesn't have a lot of competition. One of the most important parts of choosing the right niche is assessing your competition. For example, if the niche you are targeting only has 100,000 other sites competing, that might sound great. However, if you notice that the first two or three pages of Google are taken up by very strong, high page ranking sites, then you may not want to attack that niche.
Assessing your competition involves a variety of different factors. The first thing you can look at is the page rank. You can check page rank by using the Firefox browser and installing one of the add-on free pieces of software that will allow you to look at in depth information about other websites. SEOQuake is one current and popular choice. If you are looking at a particular niche and the first several results on Google show a page rank of 0 or 1, then you may have a good shot at being able to break through the competition.
Something else that you want to look at when you're assessing your competition is how long their website has been in existence. If the first 10 results in Google are extremely old domain names, then it may be hard to ever break into the first page without doing a lot of work. This isn't to say that it cannot be done, but you have to decide whether or not you want to put in the effort and whether the niche is really worth it.
Something else you want to take a look at is whether or not the sites on page 1 are actually optimizing for your keyword term. Some people do this by going to Google and putting in phrases such as "intitle"and "inurl" plus the keyword to see who is actually optimizing for the particular search term you want to target. Some people are accidentally on page 1 of Google without even trying because their page is optimized for particular keyword they did not intend to target. Often, you will find that you can overtake those search results easily.
Something else you want to do is take a look at the number of back links pointing to your competitors' websites. Then, you will be able to get a better idea of how easy it will be to build back links and overtake the first position. Your goal should always be to get on page one of Google but if you can get "above the fold" then you're likely to get a lot more traffic to your website.
There are many ways to check out your competitors. Of course, this takes time. Some people choose to use software programs that can help them assess the competition without having to go through a lot of different steps. As you get more advanced in your Internet marketing career, it makes sense to invest in software programs that can help you cut out time wasting activities such as competition assessment.
