Assisted Living Facilities Should Be Researched Before Choosing One

There is a subtle difference between nursing homes and assisted living facilities

. When a person is in a nursing home, it is either that they could not afford assisted living or they have medical needs that sometimes can not be met by faculty at the assisted living facility. The assisted living facility is for those who are 60 years or older and need a little assistance with things like a shower, dressing or other small day to day activities.

Should you think that a loved one of yours might be having difficulty getting around and doing some of their daily activities without help, the first thing you should do is to sit down with other family members and discuss the situation. After you have done that the next thing you should do is also discuss it with your loved ones primary care giver.

Once you have done that, there are two very important questions you need to ask yourself. What makes you believe that your loved ones way of living should be changed? The other question would be what kind of daily activities do you think they need help with?

After you have answered those two questions you need to consider a load of other questions as well. These questions would pertain to the assisted living facilities you might be researching. Is the facility fully licensed? Do they have insurance that also covers a person personal belongings? Do those who work there react to medical emergencies in a professional and knowledgeable manner? Is there a visitors policy with certain rules they need to adhere to? Does the contract for the assisted living cover everything from accommodations to support services? Can the contract be voided and is there any type of refund? If the needs of your loved one happens to change, will the facility still be willing to offer their services and if care changes with the resident, will the cost change along with it?

It is also important to be able to actual see the units and make sure that you find out whether or not the units they reside in are private or shared. Some people may not be able to deal with a roommate. Also lots of times people prefer private baths, make sure to find this out as well. Some people have favorite foods and snacks they love so it is also important to find out if they can keep food in their unit as well.

Activity is important so you need to find out what kind of activities they have and if there are plenty of volunteers to help out with the activities. Another important personal thing is do they allow pets. It can be traumatic for someone to leave their pet behind, this of course has been their companion.

Find out if the food is nutritional and how many meals are given a day, are their nutritional snacks available and are meal times at set times or can the resident choose when to eat. Some people do not do well in a regimental setting.

Getting a feel for the staff should not be too hard. From the moment you walk into one of these assisted living facilities, you should be able to get a feel for whether or not they are friendly, caring and helpful or if they are cold, uncaring and are there just to pick up a paycheck at the end of the week.

Once you have done your research, the most important thing of all that you need to do is sit down with your relative that might need this type of assistance and get their input. The worst thing you can do is not let them know and just place them in a facility.
