Rome, sweet Rome

Rome, sweet Rome. What can you say about a city that has been the cradle of Western Civilization for more than 3,000 years? Well, a great deal, I suppose, but that runs the risk of saying too much -- or saying so much that is doesn't make sense to the casual reader. When speaking of the Eternal City, one must be very concise. What you need are some tidbits, some places of interest, and some local color. Let's set off on our journey, then.

Let us begin where the ancient Romans themselves began: at the Quirinal hill. Given that it's the highest and largest of Rome's hills (there are seven in total), it eventually came to house the Quirinal Palace. This masterwork of architecture once housed the assorted kings of the region until it became the residence of the Pope for a time. Of course, when the Italian city-states were unified in 1861, the palace became the residence of the President of the Italian Republic.

Without leaving this mystic hilltop, we can visit the nearby Scuderie del Quirinale. This was the former papal stables, but has undergone extensive renovations to become a temporary home for many prestigious art exhibitions. A stroll atop the Quirinal is never complete without a stroll through the Scuderie. Just be sure you budget enough time to wander and free-associate.

All that walking and day-dreaming tends to work up an appetite. Fortunately, the Quirinal is aglow with eateries. From a simple slice to a formal sit-down dinner, a delicious meal is never hard to come by. Granted, that extends to all of Rome, but you will find the restaurants on this primary hill to be top-notch. If you're not feeling particularly peckish, you will also find a number of exquisite cafes and espresso bars.

As you wind down your tour of the Quirinal, you will no doubt be ready for a comfortable place to rest your weary, dream-filled head. Again, as with all things on the Quirinal, you will find what you need right there. From humble bed and breakfasts to luxury hotels, you can find lodgings that fit your budgetary constraints. Among the more popular destinations are the Hotel Caravaggio and the Hotel Artemide, which are both located a few blocks from the Presidential Palace.
