Asthma is a common respiratory disease. It is marked with breathing problems along with cough and chest problems as well. Asthma could be chronic illness besides sudden phases of attack. It is more frequent among infants and kids. Asthma poses serious threat to life if left unattended. Therefore, we must learn about asthma to reduce its impact. The knowledge helps in effective handling of asthma cases, besides avoiding its onset.

Causes Of Asthma

1. Tobacco smoke - It is considered to be the prominent reason for causing asthma. Smoking tobacco in any form like cigarettes, cigar, pipe, and likewise cause serious respiratory ailments. It is believed that damage to lungs is gradual and permanent when we inhale harmful smoke for years. It leads to asthma which is very difficult to cure. It turns into chronic problem that can only be controlled using proper medication.

2. Environment pollution - It may sound trivial. But there has been alarming rise of asthma cases since the invent of motor vehicles and industrial revolution. It points to the fact that air pollutants have affected our immune system over time and newer generations are more prone. There has been a rise in the number of asthma cases due to pollution in cities.


3. Genetic - It refers to chances of asthma if there is previous history of asthma patient in family. It is possible that child may carry asthma from affected parent. These types are detected very early in life.

4. Employment Factors - This is related to area of employment. In particular sectors like construction, paints, and chemical industry, the workers are in regular contact of dust, minute foreign particles, toxic exhausts and other items that may cause severe respiratory problems. Mostly it happens due to negligence regarding standard safety procedures that increase chances of asthma.

5. Exposure to allergens- Persons suffering from allergy are more prone to asthma when they are exposed to allergens. An allergen is a little substance that triggers allergic reaction in a person.

Prevention Of Asthma

1. Inhalers and pills - To prevent asthma attacks, inhalers must be kept handy. It could turn complicated if the person does not have inhaler or prescribed tablets with him. This practice should be followed religiously.

2. Masks and accessories - To reduce damaging effects of air pollution, we should use masks whenever possible. It is very essential for the asthma patients and children.


3. Timely medication - We should take regular treatment for asthma. One should have patience and honesty when dealing with this problem. We must not skip any doses or checkups.

4. Stop smoking- It is the most preventable cause. We must quit smoking as it causes not only asthma, but many other dangerous diseases including cancer and heart attack.

5. Cleanliness- Nothing can match the importance of hygiene. We should stay in clean surrounding and maintain personal hygiene.
