Asthma Be Gone
The respiratory condition known as Asthma is characterized by spasms in the muscles that surround the airways of the lungs, known as bronchi. The spasms cause the airways to narrow causing difficulty in breathing.
Asthma affects those between the ages of 2 and 17 years of age. Asthma also hits those of all ages and is the 8th leading cause of disease in the United States. It is a disease that can prove fatal. Unfortunately we have seen Asthma increase by over 65% in the last 2 decades. This is due to processed foods, environmental pollutants and food and environmental allergies.
The two main categories of asthma are chronic and acute. Acute will typically come about suddenly, causing what can be severe breathing difficulties. These episodes will usually not last longer than a day whereas chronic asthma is a condition that will linger on with symptoms being somewhat less severe than that of acute asthma.
The third kind of asthma is occupational asthma. This accounts for about 15% of asthma cases in the U.S. and affects only adults. This is caused by exposure to environmental toxins.
The causes of asthma include poor diet, processed foods, food and environmental allergies, infection, exposure to cold air (causes additional restriction of the airways), excessive exhaustion, exercise and stress to name the most common.
Even the inhalants that are often prescribed by physicians to treat asthma can trigger the attacks. Improper breathing habits are also a factor; shallow breathing can bring on an attack.
Allergies that trigger asthma attacks are more common in those with unhealthy diets, poor eating habits, which lead to a compromised immune system and increase the risk of infection. All of these things will add to the risk of developing this disease, and its severity.
Some of the more common foods that trigger allergy attacks are eggs, milk and dairy, sugar, wheat, peanuts soy and corn. Also chemical preservatives, good additives and food colorings can also trigger an attack.
The environmental triggers are animal dander, detergents, dust, pollen, smoke, feathers, and even textiles. Most textile fabrics are treated with formaldehyde, which can cause an attack.
Bacteria, viruses and fungi all of which can bring on allergic reactions accompany infection and asthma attacks.
It is common knowledge now that pharmaceuticals and even some of the inhalants are not always the best way to treat disease. Sometimes these substances can exacerbate the symptoms and trigger the attacks.
Some of these medications prescribed for asthma can cause serious side effects. For example, Prednisone is often prescribed for asthma and its side affects can include dizziness, headaches, diabetes, glaucoma, ulcers and even impair the bodies ability to heal wounds.
Breathing habits really can't be emphasized enough. Those who breathe through their mouths are more prone to developing asthma. It has been found, in fact, that as much as 90% of all those who suffer from asthma breath through their mouth. At the end of this article will be a link to a simple breathing apparatus that will easily teach you how to breathe right.
Breathing through the mouth also increases exposure to dust, mold, dander pollen, pollutants, etc.
