Astoria Oregon Welcomes Pioneer Enthusiasts And Seaport Visitors
Different cities of Oregon come with their own unique character; and that is what makes Oregon such a fascinating place
. Contributing to the enchanting experience of Oregon is the city of Astoria. Founded in 1805 on Columbia River as a fur trading port, the city owes its name to the first millionaire of America- John Jacob Astor.
From the maritime museum to the Flavel House and Astoria Column, everything gives a glimpse into the past and how things were in the city long ago. The calm waterfront, the lush greenery around and the mystical air of Astoria just adds to the quaint historical experience the city has to offer.
One of the prime attractions of the place which you will find in every travel guide of Astoria is the Columbia River Maritime Museum. Fittingly located near the waterfront, this 24,000 square feet tourist landmark of the city has immaculately preserved the maritime history of the place. The museum houses mesmerizing collection of ship wrecks, lighthouses, fishing carriers of the yore and a lot more. It lets you be a part of the naval history of Astoria through a life size model of a submarine tower as well as a floating lighthouse to explore, which is spooky yet enthralling at the same time.
There is also a reconstructed bridge of a warship to explore here and if you still don't get enough of it, you can be the captain of a tugboat and feel the thrill of navigating the waters. With a nominal admission fee of $10 and visiting hours from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm every day, you get plenty of opportunity to get up, close and personal with the naval history of Astoria at the Maritime Museum.
But there is something which you won't find in most travel guides of Astoria and that's the Uppertown Firefighters Museum and the Scandinavian Midsummer Festival. The Firefighters Museum is a great place for kids, with tones of firefighting memorabilia to get mesmerized by. The museum also has a dedicated Children's Museum where your kids can get lost for hours and they won't complain.
The admission into the museum is absolutely free, but it is open on Sundays only from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Thus, if you are looking to explore the different experience that this museum in Astoria has to offer, plan your trip accordingly.
Although the history of Astoria will give you plenty of insight into the culture of the place, the Scandinavian Midsummer Festival here isn't to be missed if you want to have a cultural experience of the place.
With people dancing to foot tapping music, rituals to destroy evil and reinstate the good, tug-of-war competitions and an atmosphere of revelry, you will not be able to stop yourself from being a part of this fantastic festival which celebrates the history and culture of Astoria. The festival is hosted every year in June, and is not be missed if you are visiting Astoria during that time of the year.
And if you thought we are done with the Astoria experience, think again. There is lots more to be done, lots more to be explored here still. There is the Astoria Bridge, the fascinating cruises, the historic Astoria Column, which is the tallest structure in the world made of reinforced cement, the Flavia House, the quaint Victorian Houses and the Trolley to experience and explore here. In fact, no Astoria experience is complete without a ride on the historic trolley.
Dating back to 1913, the trolley takes you through scenic gateways of the city, allowing you to sit back and take in the scenic wonders of the city at your own leisure. The trolley operates from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on weekdays and 10:00 am to 8:00 pm on weekends, with an admission cost of $1, which is nothing compared to the experience it offers.
But they say Astoria is best experienced by wandering on one's own and not through travel guides. Just throw yourself into the enchanting city and take to the road. Every corner of Astoria has something to offer to tourists, and you get to explore enthralling beauties which are seldom talked about in travel guides. That's the magic of Astoria and it seems like a never-ending spell.
