Astrology: Places , Planes And Precession Of The Equinoxes
In addition to angles, aspects and nodes in Astrology
, there are also terms used to define placements in the sky. The following are some astrological positions that you should be familiar with to interpret your chart:
Arcronical place The position of a planet opposite the sun. It comes from the Greek word akronychos, at sunset.
Anaretic place between 29 and 30 degrees or the final degree of any sign. It is also called the degree of fate.
Aphetic places parts of the horoscope ranging from 5 degrees above the Ascendant to 25 degree below it, from 5 degrees below the descendant to 25 degrees above and from 4 degrees preceding the ninth house cusp to the middle of the eleventh house. Also called hylegiacal places.
Conjunction formed when two planets occupy a close position in the zodiac, usually within an 8 degree orb.
Aphelion The point in a planet's orbit when it is farthest from the sun.
Perihelion the point in the planets orbit when it is closest to the sun.
Apogee - The point in a planet's orbit when it is farthest from Earth
Perigee - The point in a planet's orbit when it is closest to Earth
Contraparallel when two planets occupy the same degree and are in opposite direction of declination, contraparallel is the angle between them.
Equinox occurs when the center of the sun is directly over the Earths equator. There are two types: vernal equinox in sprin and autumnal equinox on the first day of autumn. The days and nights are of equal duration.
Ascending planet - planets in the eastern section (fourth quadrant) of a horoscope.
Casimi - forms a conjunction with the sun within 30 inches of partile
East Point - the sign and degree rising over the eastern horizon at Earth's equator.
Precession of the Equinoxes
Precession refers to a gravity-induced change in an astronomical bodys rotational axis or orbital path. It is often slow, happening over several millennia, but continuous. For Earth, the precession is caused by the gravitational pull of the sun, the moon and to a lesser extent, other celestial bodies.
The precession of the Earth is estimated to happen over a period of 26,000 years. This movement accounts for the astrological ages. It is also called precession of the equinoxes, because the equinoxes are said to move westward along the ecliptic. The slight change is said to be relative to the fixed stars and opposite the motion of the sun.
The precession of the equinoxes also accounts for the difference between sidereal astrology and tropical astrology. Sidereal astrology is patterned after the actual constellations upon which the zodiac signs are based. Tropical astrology uses the tropics as the main point of reference. The precession of the equinoxes is said to result in a shift between the two systems by about one degree every 70 years.
This concept is often used in astrology as it accounts for differences between traditions. Even horoscopes based on sidereal and tropical astrology result in different start and end dates for each sign.
The discovery of the procession of the equinoxes is credited to Hipprachus. He is said to have discovered the astronomical phenomenon in 130 BC. It is attributed to him by Ptolemy. At that time of discovery, they noted that the sun was in a slightly different position at the time of Spring Equinox each year, as measured against fixed stars. This observed behavior is called a progression.
