At-home Car Detailing

Detailing your car at home can be an easy task

. Follow these simple and easy instructions to get professional quality results without having to pay for them. First off, start with the interior. A windy day is ideal to detail a car so the carpeting dries quickly. Remove the floor mats first and then vacuum the carpeting and upholstery and dash or where ever there is a lot of dust accumulation. Move the seats forward and backwards to vacuum the front and the back of the interior. If there is any stains on the carpeting use foam cleaner. Spray the foam on the stains and use a damp sponge to work into the stained area. Wash the floor mats that were removed and let dry.

Using a cleaner like Simple Green, which is a mild cleaner, best suits the interior and seats. Dilute with water at a ratio of 10 to 1. Do not use any type of glossy cleaner on leather or vinyl seats, it may damage the seats and make them slippery. One of the best items to use on leather seats is hair conditioner. This will make the seats clean and lubricate the leather so cracking will not occur in the future. For seat belts, if dirty spray a mild soap and clean, wipe with a clean towel and let dry.

Tricky Areas

The dash and the area with multiple buttons is always a challenge. Canned compressed air works fabulous to initially get the dust out. Once that's done if there is still areas that needs further attention, use a Q-tip works well. If the dash has a flat type of finish make sure you are not applying anything on it that will make it glossy. For the air vents, Q-tips will get the dust and grim off quickly. Do not squirt anything into the vents. Odometers and speedometers simply spray a cleaner and wipe clean. Wash the car with a mild soap and then rinse thoroughly. Get all the soap completely off the paint.

The Paint Job

After washing, check out the paint to see if there are any spots that require attention such as a ding from a rock that hit the car while driving or some scratched areas. Use a quality clear coat safe cleaner and/or wax and then buff out. This will give the area a layer of protection from the elements so no further damage will incur. Cars of today have an acrylic finish so nothing further may need to be done. On an older car, the old school way of waxing the car then letting the wax dry to then buff off may be necessary. If that's the case be ready for a dandy of a work out.

Tricks of the Trade

Wet an old toothbrush to go around the emblems and crevices, like car name and logo, brake lights and front lights to get the grim and grit out so they will gleam. Spray a mild cleaner and wipe clean and once finished, stand back and admire your handy work and smile. The wheels always need some tender loving care as they roll through dirt, dust, sand, muck and everything you could think of. Use a mild soap to wash and then rinse. Polishing the chrome wheels will give the sparkling cool effect like floating on doves as you cruise down the highway. Squirt on some Armorall for a beautiful black finish. The tires will look dynamite when you're done and now your car is beautifully detailed.
