Athletes Back In Action Days Following Nose Surgery
Within a week following nose surgery, Juventus Martin Caceres and Milan's Allesandro
Nesta were suspected to be prepared for action in their team's training sessions. Caceres had undergone nose surgery to reduce the appearance of the defender's septum fracture. He sustained the nasal fracture during a training session. Nesta sustained his nasal fractures during a game against Verona. Due to the degree of the fractures in both cases, physicians suspected that they could return to team training sessions within a week following surgery.
It is not uncommon for athletes to sustain nasal injuries during practice or competitive games. In some cases, the types of injuries vary among the different kinds of sports. One item that is for certain is that nose injuries are more common than other sports related injuries. The good news for athletes like Caceres and Nesta is that their injuries are much like others, but the fractures may be unique for every individual. Fortunately, plastic surgeons have numerous techniques that they may use to treat even the most minor types of nose fractures. Nasal fractures for athletes may include: nasal bones, cartilage, underlying tissue tears, nasal septum break and nasal tip fracture.
Nesta and Caceres are good examples of how nose surgery recovery has been simplified for many people in recent years. The techniques may be less invasive, contributing to less downtime and decreased discomfort following surgery. The nasal packing may be less cumbersome than years past. There are also techniques that are highly targeted for specific types of fractures. This greater precision can offer more delicacy during the procedure. So, recovery from nose surgery today is not necessarily what it used to be.
As more techniques have become available for nose surgery, researchers had become interested in studying the satisfaction level among people that had undergone the open or closed approaches to nose surgery. Dr. Michael P. Ondik and colleagues at Penn State Hershey Medical Center examined the medical records and follow up for nearly 100 people that suffered nasal fractures. The number of participants that underwent the open rhinoplasty was almost equal to the number of participants that underwent closed techniques of rhinoplasty. The conclusions of their research were published in the September/October issue of the journal entitled Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery.
In order to participate in the study, participants had to meet certain criteria. Patient data was examined to ensure that nasal repairs were successful through the appropriate technique for the particular type of fracture sustained by the individual(s). The participants records were examined for fracture type and variables relating to bone or cartilage displacement from the nostrils (deviated septum).
